The Big Idea

What if getting older meant becoming more yourself?

Women are often taught to think of aging in terms of loss — youth, relevance, beauty, opportunity.

Blooming tells a different story.

Through the experiences of more than 120 women, Dr. Dorothy Marcic explores what can happen when women move beyond those expectations and begin to define aging for themselves.

The result is a story-rich guide to growing older with greater courage, clarity and possibility.

Why Dorothy Wrote It

A different conversation about aging.

Dorothy wanted to understand what women were actually experiencing as they moved through their fifties and beyond.

What gave them confidence?
What changed in their relationships?
What did they stop tolerating?
What new ambitions appeared?

And what allowed some women to experience later life not as decline, but as expansion?

Those conversations became the foundation of Blooming

“I guarantee this book will lift your spirits. The research is deep and encouraging, the stories inspiring, and the optimism these pages generate is positively infectious. Reading Blooming made me proud to be old and informed, vibrant, still learning and ever evolving towards a wisdom that only comes with age.”

— Beverly Donofrio, Writer of memoirs Riding in Cars with Boys, Looking for Mary, and Astonished

“Marcic reminds us that the second act isn't a winding down—it's a leveling up. It encourages every woman to trade the role of ‘supporting character’ for the ‘lead,’ treating every new year as an opportunity to become a more authentic, daring version of herself.”

— Cathy Romano, RN, Mental Health Nurse Manager

STAND UP COMEDY

One is Funny Over Fifty

Funny & Funky Over Fifty is a live stand-up comedy showcase celebrating women who prove that life after fifty can be sharper, bolder, and a lot funnier. Hosted by Janice Maffei, the show brings together women comedians including Ophira Eisenberg, Mina Hartong, Carla Johnston, and Dr. Dorothy Marcic for an evening of candid, irreverent comedy.

For Dorothy, comedy became another way to explore the realities of ageing, confidence, relationships, and reinvention. Through humor and shared experience, the performance challenges familiar ideas about getting older and turns them into stories of freedom, perspective, and possibility.

“I’m 78, and this is my advice about growing older: don’t. No good will come of it. But if you must grow older, read Dorothy Marcic’s wise, humane, and insightful book.”

— Randy Cohen, Original writer of The Ethicist for The New York Times and host of Person Place Thing

“This clarion call to women of a certain age explores ways we can tap into our wisdom, boldness and joy.”

— Laurie Loewenstein, Death of a Rainmaker

More Than Interviews

Stories supported
by research.

Alongside the personal stories of the women Dorothy interviewed, Blooming draws on research from psychology, sociology and adult development.

The book combines individual experience with a wider look at how women change, adapt and develop throughout later adulthood.

So it is not simply a collection of inspirational stories.

It is an exploration of what helps women continue to grow.

“Blooming really hit home for me. At the age of 51 life has hit a little differently like so many of the women in this book. I’ve found confidence in myself due to life changes, separation, children not needing me like they use to, finding what makes me happy and most of all doing what I need to do for me. This book helped me recognize I am not alone.”

— Debbie Tuttle, WW Coach & Behavioral TA

“Dorothy's book is a marvelous collection of truth-telling from a wide range of wise women. Dorothy is a genius at recognizing the depth and breadth of women's history, wisdom and capacity for incredible strength. Read it and feel the sisterhood from across generations around the world!”

— Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker, Founders of Nurturings
